Our goal: A DESIGNED NEWS PLATFORM BUILT ON DEPROGRAMMING,
media literacy AND shared AUDIENCE EMPATHY.
Social media has us all trapped in little bubbles. We get the information we want to hear, from the people and sources we want to follow. We’re making terrible choices because of it. No one thinks they're biased; we just don't realize the extent to which we’re having their news filtered.
Instead of forcing people into a worldview they don't see (liberal or conservative), REPRESENT allows for readers to have content from their sources presented alongside of equally-biased and weighted content from the opposing viewpoint. Over time, users are guided to lesser-biased sources.
Sources will be initially ranked and sorted by political bias using publicly established efforts. The criteria for a source to change bias rank will be published and re-evaluated here with the results and reasoning also shared.
Users and bipartisan journalist editors will flag stories. Key topics for the day will be grouped together. Further, journalists will draft positions using content from equally-weighted and hyperlinked opposite sources. Topics will show interest and activity level by either conservative or liberal bias to expose stories that you should care about.
This is not a cash-grab. The platform is being designed to encourage both sides to understand the entire picture within a desirable user experience. Content and topics can be accessed through alternate pathways, quickly. We will allow for users to find their stories by source, topic or bias.
Already with the Trump administration, a new antagonism with the established press (either "mainstream" or otherwise) is leading to new questions of access, gag orders, objectivity and bias for stories. It will increasingly fall on us, the citizens, to be informed and aware of gaps to hold our elected officials responsible to make responsible decisions.
